I am planning on driving from Rapid City SD to Shelby Mt this summer and wondered what the trip was like. I would like to avoid any mountains.
Last year I drove through Yellowstone and throught Wyoming, and that was enough mountain driving for me.
Anyone who has taken the route I am planning and can give me any info about it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

And before anyone gets on my case for not wanting to see mountains....I lived in the Rocky Mountains for many years....I just hate driving through them, lol.

What does Google maps tell you? Compared to the Colorado Rockies the route from Rapids City to Shelby is just ONE small mountain pass on the Crow Reservation between Belle Fourche and Hardin, MT. Desolate but not like the Mountain driving in Colorado. Summer time? Piece of cake.

I tried looking on Google maps and I couldn't figure out how hilly it was. I thought that people who lived in the region, or drove through that way would be a better source of information.

I figured it wasn't as rocky as going through Wyoming was, or like it was coming out of Yellowstone....but that might just be wishful thinking on my part.

In montana you will have a couple hills coming from s dak...The rocky mountains are to the west of Shelby.

Thanks, hills I can handle. I just don't like the winding mountain roads with no shoulders.....call me a chicken.
I drove from Thermopolis to Rapid City and we went through some hairpin curves and high elevations in Wyoming ....I hated that!!

You will be in the plains, and foothill areas on your trip. The mountains are west of there.

The interstates and major highways through the mountains all have shoulders and barriers; it's not like you can just easily drive off a cliff. They aren't terribly windy either.

That said there are no mountains along your route.

Thank you!! I am looking forward to the trip now. As a side note I just want to say, I spent a night in Bozeman last summer and it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. I tried to talk my husband into relocating, lol.
