I will be looking for a smallish 2-3 bedroom rental house when I move in early Nov 2012. Some of the Great Falls threads go back to 2007...I'd like some up-to-date advice. I'm female & will live alone, so safety is on my mind. I like old neighborhoods that are kept up. Could anyone point out good areas to check-out within 1-2 miles of downtown? Please use parks, churches or schools as reference points, and I bet I'll find them! And while we're at it, is meth (or other drug use) changing, or still a noticeable problem?

Just this morning I was using GooEarth to cruise my old neighborhood, about a mile east of Great Falls High School near Faith Lutheran Church. Doesn't look like it's changed much, other than the trees we planted in the mid-1960s are now huge Still appears quiet and well-kept. Back then the height of crime was a busted car antenna. That's about 2.5 miles from downtown, I used to do it on a bike all the time.

I did notice two different weeping birch trees that appear to have a lot of dead limbs (one on the lot next door to where we lived) ... is some disease getting them??

There are quite a few apartment houses and duplexes down by the courthouse which is downtown. As far as meth...any meth is a problem. Yes, Great Falls has meth houses. I am so glad I don't live there anymore and am raising my children in a more remote part of Montana.

To magoomafoo,

I'm curious, when did you move from Great Falls? Were you ever directly impacted by a meth house, or drug-related crime?

ToReziac:

Thanks for this tip re: a specific neighborhood. It would be cool to hear from someone who is living there now....

Best to ya'
Anoka

Yes, indeed! Anoka, MN was my original hometown, but haven't lived there in a long, long time.

Well howdy, sorta long-ago neighbor! I lived in Moorhead for a few years when I was a kid (and briefly in Alexandria) and half the Norwegians up around Bigfork are some sort of shirttail relation.

I moved about 20 years ago to the top of the Rockies. Drugs were a problem then and they are still a problem now.

To Magoomafoo,

Thanks for this very up-to-date answer. It's exactly what I wanted to know. I will ask plenty of questions about a potential rental property & its neighbors.

I think you'll be pretty well able to tell simply by cruising the neighborhoods. Well-kept or poorly-kept, nice yards or crap laying all over, old houses in good shape, or old houses with the paint gone and the screen doors hanging askew. It was that obvious when I lived there, and still was when my mom last lived there (she moved after she retired, I think that was in '98) and I doubt it's changed all that much. My aunt (who is 84 and lives alone) still lives up on the far northeast side (in an area of older single-wide mobiles on owned lots), and I haven't heard any complaints.
