To the family moving to the AFB in Montana, my heart and respect goes out to you. My son was in an ANG unit for 12 years in a state near the college he attended. Of course, there were locals there, but he was never disrespectful to them. He ended up running the command post at the air base, and last week got his commission. He always has the utmost respect for all airmen because he was one. I cannot believe some of the people there would not be receptive to newcomers, but I understand it a bit. You cannot expand your horizons if you encounter the same persons every day. New persons and new ideas give you a different perspective.
Most of us know that many of these airmen offered their lives for us. I saw my son leave on a bus, 3 months before the war started. Many things were done before it started that were not published. He came back.
I hope none of the people who are not hospitable to the airmen have to see their son go to war. But, maybe it would teach them something.

When I was growing up in Great Falls, airmen next door were a fact of life. Most were good guys, some were jerks, just like anywhere. You get a lot of young men in the military who are still at the know-it-all age, and you also get some with a hypertrophied Right And Responsible Bump; either can be annoying, but not much different from any team of young men, including sports teams. Overall, tho, they're pretty decent people, or (with few exceptions) they wouldn't be in the military in the first place, especially now while it's mostly volunteers and with a considerable chance they'll be laying their lives on the line.

Too many family's have been burnt by transplants. So their anger and resistiveness is justified. They have more transplants then they do Military. But once they understand that your military, things are cool. For the most part.
That's quite an indictment of Montanans. Especially from a forum moderator who lives in Wyoming.

I am a transplant. I came to Montana from Pennsylvania in 1948. A few years ago, I moved to Wyoming to work. I found the Wyomingites to be MUCH worse than the "Native Montanans" towards newcomers, even though my step-father was a former resident of the area where I was working! Eventually, I moved back to Montana, then to Great Falls. three of my kids graduated from GFHS. We had no problem joining the community.
Even California transplants (and I have known a few) are accepted in the community IF they accept the community as it is, warts and all, instead of always saying "Well, in California we did THAT, but we did it THIS way!"
Sorry, I simply do not accept your blanket indictment of Montanans!

It is what I observed when I lived in Montana. I haven't always lived in Wyoming, just so happens that I do now. You also chose to quote what I said in 2008 or so. 3 years ago. And, you are correct. Most Wyoming folk are worse yet.

The people I encountered with that attitude, had you read the rest of the thread, were probably not from Montana or at least not Native Montanans, but instead, those people that bought their piece of heaven and then didn't want anybody else moving in.

Years ago, I was a Wyoming Resident and joined the military. When I got out of the Military and came back, I was an outsider. Regardless of the fact that I still maintained my Wyo drivers license, my inlaws lived here, most of my friends lived here, my past employers were here, made no difference. I was an outsider until I proved myself, once again. I found the same when I livied in Montana.

Default Raynesford, MT

Thank you, Reziac, for your reply. We did eventually retire in Oklahoma. I would still have given a lot to move North. I love that part of the USA!
