That is the truth and if someone wants to live that life, I highly encourage them to go to California. It’s a wonderful place to live if your into that lifestyle. And it is a choice.

But back to the OPs question. It sounds like to me they are looking at Bos Angeles(Bozeman) as a place to live. The vibe in that city is money, lots of businesses that cater to the rich with extra cash to burn. Livingston would be a nice outside town. Lots of Hollywood actors and California movie industry types live in the area.
Livingston is fast approaching Bozeman cost of living and the Bozeman lifestyle. It's pretty much art galleries and restaurants for the rich downtown and bars for the locals to drown their sorrows.

Most of the blue collar bars in Livingston are gone. The Rainbow is a tire shop, the Longbranch is a hipster diner.
If a local wants to cut the dust they usually need to go out of town to the Old Saloon or some other inconvenient place.

It’s really changed since I first past through that area as a 13 year old kid. We spent the night there in 1973, at the KOA after going through the Yellowstone and left out the north Portal. Livingston had a rustic, working man’s vibe and everyone was really nice. Oh well, that’s gone, never to return.

There were a few blue collar, middle class jobs there in the past but they are mostly long gone. Plenty of minimum wage jobs to wait on the trust fund babies and other nouveau riche people living there. Are there even many ranches left in the area that haven't been subdivided? It's mostly gone the way of Bozeman and it took less time.
