I am trying to relocate to the Missoula or Kalispell area. I have 14 years in the construction industry with a emphasis on custom residential work. I also have worked on the commercial and institutional side. Currently I am working for the largest residential remodel company in Washington as a working site superintendent.
I need to get good steady work before uplifting my family. I can relocate quickly to start working while my wife "closes shop" here. does anyone have any job leads in this direction? what area would be more stable? what smaller towns would be good to raise a family in? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I think either area would be fairly stable, but Missoula might be a better fit. It's a university town, and while it has experienced a lot of growth, it has a core feeling of community. Kalispell has some really weird politics, some meth problems, and a lot of new money. Kalispell was actually the subject of a PBS "Frontline" series episodes on environmentalists versus freemen-type anti-environmentalist vigilantes. It's an absolutely beautiful area though.

I live in Helena, so I'm not sure what type of associations each one of these communities have. However, in Helena, we have the HBIA (Helena Building Industry Association) that is a good starting point for information on construction careers. I'd surf the net a little and see if you can find similar associations in Kalispell or Missoula.

Also, you can go to jobs.mt.gov (no www); this is the state Job Service website and the most comprehensive way to find jobs. Click on Advanced Search in the bottom right corner and it will take you to a page that will allow you to search by the keyword of construction. There are lots of jobs on there now, but of course, superintendent jobs are always a little harder to find. You do have to register (it's free) with the Job Service to get referrals. This is a governmental organization, not some for-profit employment service.

thanks for the tip. I did go to the jobs.mt.gov site and have sent my resume to a couple. I actually would prefer to live in the missoula area, maybe towards Superior or St.Regis. Does anyone know how the unions do? Payscale for journeyman carpenters and if they have year around work? anymore tips?
Thanks

Is there anyone on here with a construction background in western Montana that could give me more ideas on finding good solid long term work?
