Something super special about the Curly Coats? or just a preference?
Well, some people think so Overall Labs are easier to deal with, but a good Curly is a helluva dog too. I've owned several Curlies (tho now I have only Labs), and almost all the good working Curlies in the U.S. are descended from my N.Z. female's one litter (by my Aust. dog). I haven't had Curlies in many years, and by now the line has become too diluted to interest me. But I still think about 'em whenever I talk to someone from down under, cuz that's where most of the really good hunting Curlies came from.

Hey all

ElkHunter - awesome thread, thanks for that, info that I was really after. Just as a side question if you know. Would a slight female be able to handle the 'riot gun' (12 gauge shotgun) that is spoken of?
Glad to hear that you can take a Grizzly or Black Bear out if if came down to a 'you or it' situation, although I now understand what an incredible shot you have to be to do so.

Opps Reziac, didn't mean to step on your Curly toes there! Ha! To be honest with you, I don't know anyone that owns a Curly. Loads of the bush dogs are Kelpie Xs or Sheep dog or Pigdogs. A great friend of mine has a cattle farm in Canowindra NSW (pronounced Canoundra) with Staffies and he swears by them. Tough little buggers. I myself have a Teacup Chihuahua who would happily take the leg off any of the above mentioned breeds, or any dog that she comes across, bossy little blighter (it's more likely that she would kill any of the above mentioned breeds by cutting off their air supply after they had swallowed her! Ha!)

Yes, I believe a female could handle a riot gun. A determined female. But I believe an approaching bear could make one very determined.

Actually, I wouldn't recommend hiking and having to lug a riot gun. Not very practical. I could see it if you were camped, and packed in.

If I was going to go hiking, I'd simply carry bear spray, and also be very aware of my surroundings.

Yeah, Staffies are good little workers. And the Chihuahua is actually a sort of indoor rat terrier, which is why the real ones are tough little buggers. The tiny short-legged wussy type is newly popular but not really correct.
