Sorry, couldn't put my words together to title this question. I'm wanting to ask whether or not the
beaches of Santa Cruz/Capitola area are safe to stroll in the evenings? We're arriving in Aptos
on Dec 26th to start over. Presently we're on Maui, and I gotta say, once the sun sets you retreat
from the beaches for safety reasons. Can't find info if the beaches are closed at a certain time.
Thanks for any insight.

I would avoid only the main beach near the boardwalk. Aptos and Capitola should be safe. However, in the dead of winter, you may prefer walking when the sun is out, as it will be chilly after dark.

Yeah avoid the boardwalk. But other than that, all the Aptos, Watsonville, Capitola, Rio, La Selva, and most Santa Cruz beaches are perfectly safe. When I was in high school we used to bonfire and drink there all night.

I agree pretty much with previous posts. But curious why Maui is so unsafe?

I'd say as well just go for a walk along West Cliff Drive. There's a few places you can drop down to several beach, but it's a beautiful view and place to see that's close to the center of of town. The beach in Capitola or anything down by Aptos will be fine as well though... The Boardwalk Beach just gets deserted in the off-season so it's got an empty feel to it, though it's honestly not super dangerous or anything.
