Assuming you mean crime potential which could happen almost anywhere but for topics sake lets say
Walkely ave area
Plamondon and Barckly area
Hochelaga/Maisoneuve area
Ville Marie metro station
If you are meaning just low income areas then
St Henri
Verdun
Pte Ste Charles
Jean Talon Market area
Are a few that come to mind..
When I make my trip to Montreal, I also want to see the ghetto areas. Every city I go to I try to make a trip to the more the more low-income areas. Just like to see them. Except for Juarez in Mexico, HUGE mistake.
The most 'ghetto' area I can think of is Cartierville/Ville-St-Laurent east of Marcel-Laurin, west of the 15, south of Gouin, but mostly south of Salaberry. Low income housing, poverty, crime. Particularly bad is the VSL segment facing Bombardier, along Grenet and some other side streets there, pretty much all the way down to Cote-Vertu. Edouard-Laurin on the other side of Cote-Vertu is pretty bad too.
Verdun is far to be considered dangerous as well as low income areas. I would never walk in Cote Vertu metro or little Lebanon. That area is really strange...the village could be strange and sketchy too.

I hear you. These areas are more "real" and often have character, if you're willing to brave them. Plus, if you're into collecting old stuff (records, books, furniture) they are often treasure troves.
You're comment about Juarez is intriguing, tell us more.
