My family of three (soon-to-be four) is planning on relocating to Montreal early next year. Having visited Montreal only as a tourist, I'm not familiar with most neighborhoods in the city and am doing my best to piece together impressions based on Google searches (and soon, hopefully, chats with people who actually know the city well).
Ideally we'd like to settle in a neighborhood that's in Montreal proper (i.e., not in a suburb) with good access to public transportation-- particularly the metro-- as we don't plan on getting a car. Someplace that's family-friendly but still urban, full of character, and, ideally, multicultural would be great. Other plusses: a big park with a playground, and plenty of cafes, restaurants, and mom-and-pop shops within walking distance.
From what I've read so far, I like the sound of NDG and Rosemont, and rents there seem to be more affordable than in, say, the Plateau. I realize, though, that they are huge neighborhoods, so I'm wondering if I should focus on certain areas within.
Also, are there any other neighborhoods I'm overlooking that might meet our criteria?
