Hello,

My husband, my son and myself are relocating to Montreal as my husband is in the army and has been posted there; I have a few questions regarding locations to move and renting in Montreal...so here goes. ( Husband is anglophone and I am francophone/anglophone).

1. I've done extensive research on where to move in Montreal and there is so many beautiful places; can you recommend an area that is not too far from the army base? ( I think the base is located on rue notre-dame est.) I'm kind of stuck as I'm not sure if we should stay in the city or the suburbs. How is the Rosemont-la petite-patrie area? What about Longueuil? I know I will be fine as I am bilingual; however, my husband is anglophone....would he be able reside in those areas with no difficulty? Any input would be appreciated. Also, looking for suggestions that are safe and nice areas to move with our toddler.

2. When renting in Montreal is it usual to have to buy all your appliances? Also, none of the adds state if we are to pay first and last. ( I heard that it is illegal for landlords to request both).

If you have any information that you feel would be beneficial please go ahead.

Thank you for your time.

Those areas you list are almost 100% French and although that might not be a problem for you hubby might feel somewhat isolated. a bit further west is plateau Mont Royal and has a bit of a higher Anglo population or going even further west you get into some very Anglo areas of Westmount/NDG/Montreal West. I'd forget about off island residence like Longueuil as the commute can be brutal if traveling by car especially since for the next 5 years one of the major bridges into Montreal(Champlain)is about to be torn down and a new one built.
My Anglophone daughter just rented a nice place on the eastern side of NDG,(Decairie above Sherbrooke) between the Vendome and Villa Maria metro stations, the stove and fridge came with the apartment and she wasnt asked for a security deposit..
Metro stations your husband would need to get to for work are either Cadillac or Langelier. Then either walk or take the bus to the base.

It is illegal for a landlord to ask for first and last month's rent.

"When the lease is signed, the lessor may require the tenant to make the first rent payment and even make that a condition for signing the lease. For example, if on April 1, 2015, you sign a lease that takes effect on July 1, the lessor might require you to pay rent for the month of July at the time you sign the lease on April 1.

However, the lessor cannot require more than that, for example, a deposit for the keys to the dwelling or as a safeguard against damage the tenant may cause."

When we rented apartments in multi-family dwelling, fridges and stoves were provided, and there was generally a laundry room available for use by the tenants.

When we rented a duplex, and later a triplex, we bought our own appliances and had a washer/dryer hookup.
