Could somebody who is making a little bit over minimum wage and work full time in Montreal be able to live comfortable (rent 1 bedroom apartment, able to eat, get metropass or car, etc.) without having a roommate?
With minimum wage being $10hr i think you could pull it off,
$500 -$600 for a small apartment in a low scale part of the city,
$100 a week for groceries,
$150 per month on a cable/phone/internet bundle
$85 a month for bus pass
$ 50-100 a month for electric,heating costs might play a factor
$50-$100 a month for miscellaneous.
IMO theres no way you could afford a car,
Smoking is out of the question
Alcohol in very limited quantities,
Social life? whatever you can do for free.
Dining out? maybe a cheap meal once a month.
Not much of a life but for a motivated frugal person i think you can survive on the basics of life, hope you have bigger plans in life as this minimal existance lifestyle gonna get old real fast..

Are groceries THAT expensive up there for a single person? I pay about $150/week for a family of 5 down here (3 kids) and I don't particularly buy cheap stuff... People who feed their kids ramen noodles, chips and chef boyardee beefaroni type of foods can get by with spending maybe half of what I spend.
I usually spend $200 a week on groceries to feed a family of 4, if a single person wants to live on cheap crap like ramin noodles and Kraft Dinner you could probably get by for $50 a week. However groceries also include Toilet paper, soap and dish soap, toothpaste, occasionally lightbulbs and a whole bunch of other stuff that isnt food.
Thanks. What if two couples working minimum wage jobs and have 2 kids? Daycare is extremely cheap, free healthcare and paid maternity leave ?
Life might be improved a little with 2 people working minimum wage.
Yeah daycare can be $7 a day if you qualify and if theres a vacancy you can fill.not as easy as you might think.
Free healthcare?how do you think all the hospitals and related staff infrastructure are paid for.Think high taxes.
Paid maternity leave? also subsidized by taxes.

$200 a week for a family of 4 - it is exactly $50 per person a week. $150 a week on groceries for a single person seems overkill. In our family it is, too, about $50-70 per person a week. And that includes occasional eating out and toiletries.
Alright already he can get by on $50 a week for groceries, We are just laying out generalities for the op.Much of the stuff one buys doesnt always get divisible by 4 as i'd have to buy as an example a tube of toothpaste whether i'm living alone or i'm living with a large family.

Okay, so I guess it's comparable. After toiletries, trash bags, and other random household items, I'm at around $200/week also.
And you're right, it's not really divisible by 4 (or 5 in my case.)
