Montreal is the greatest city in Canada. Toronto prides itself on how many people it has from other places, "the most diverse city in the world" is what Torontonians brag about. That's fine, good for them. Vancouver is beautiful city but has become an enclave for the wealthy and a nightmare for the working class looking to live out the Canadian dream.
Montreal still has a strong identity, local culture and working class man can still afford a home. It also has diversity and all the other things Toronto likes to brag about too. Not to mention the night life in MTL blows the other two cities out of the water.

OK, now that you have given your tourism PR bit, what about the question?
The NYC and Toronto comparison isn't too far fetch, but Montreal isn't anything like NYC.
Maybe Boston run by the Quebecois, but I haven't been to Boston yet, so I may be way off.
Having lived in the NYC suburbs for many years, and having been to Toronto, Toronto is indeed a large city and cosmopolitan, but it is definitely a far fetch to compare it to NYC. Chicago, yes, but NYC … not even close.
As for Montreal, it is one of the more interesting cities on this continent. In some ways, it compares with my personal favorites of San Francisco and New Orleans.
