Living there as a student and not driving for months on end is what made me want to live like that after college too (and I do).

Also, as long as you're not living on top of one of the downtown hills, you're not scaling mountains on a daily basis.

My wife and I love the way the majority of Morgantown is accessible by foot. Our city has one of the best developed rail trail systems in the country, as well as a very good public transit system with buses and the PRT enabling people who don't drive to get around fairly easily. Few people live on the hilltops, and it is rare to need to go there. Most areas are very walkable, and with our city's compact nature they are generally within reach. Otherwise, the busses are cheap... they're free if you are retirement age or a student.
