There is no question that unless a pepperoni roll was made in North Central West Virginia, it isn't a real, authentic pepperoni roll. Now, for those who love this wonderful culinary delight, here is an authentic pepperoni roll recipe...

I've never understood the appeal of the pepperoni roll.

It's nothing special by itself, which paradoxically makes it special and beloved.

It's simple, it's humble, it's genuine, it's delicious, and it's not the best for your health.

It's WV in a nutshell. Or bread dough, if you will.

It's a heck of a lot easier just to buy frozen bread dough to make them. But I guess the pepperoni rolls I make at home aren't real.

They aren't real if you are making them on the Parkersburg end of US 50. They might pass muster if you make them in Clarksburg.

LOL ... funny, but the truth is real pepperoni rolls only come from NCWV. Everything else is an often far removed pretender. I'm not talking about yours in particular. Just sayin'.

Of course, you could throw your own into the mix and see how they fare. Patrons in these parts are particularly keen on authenticity though, and they all have their own favorite bakeries.

I agree. There's a lot of regional pride when it comes to food whether it be from somewhere in WV or anywhere else. I'm from Bridgeport so grew up making and eating pepperoni rolls, steak hoagies, hot dogs, and all the other finer foods in life. I may give that recipe you sent out a try the next time I make them. It looks good.

A friend of mine worked as a delivery driver at an Italian bakery near Shinnston and sometimes I would help him deliver the pepperoni rolls. We delivered all over north-central West Virginia and into the Mount Morris/Waynesburg, PA area.

They are still very popular. It's just a very simple, unpretentious food.

Is that Abruzzino's? My wife grew up right next to them. They deliver to Parkersburg too. I like their pepperoni rolls and breads as well as any of the bakeries.
