Rural areas up to a hour around the Albany tri-cities area.
That can get a decent enough house with a good bit of elbow room.

Farther northeast and northwest and you may find much more land included

In Columbia, most parts you could get between a 1500-2000 sq. ft. home on a city lot (around 1/4 acre).

3 BR/2 bath single family home with a garage, on about 1/4 acre. Home prices around here are about $100/square foot.

A very nice 3 BR, 2B, 2 car garage, single family home on a quarter acre in Southwest Florida (where I plan to move). Or, a so-so condo or older rowhouse in Baltimore County that probably needs work (where I currently live).

Do you know of anywhere in your area…where you could find a small nice home or condo for $160,000 or less? We have about $160,000 in cash to spend. We do not want a mortgage. We are minimalists…who spend most of our time outdoors anyway. A safe, decent, area for kids is the only criteria…bit it’s a must.
There are MANY parts of the country where $160,000 will buy you a very nice place to live. Do you have a preference for rural life or city life? (You won't be getting real big city life, but maybe within 30 minutes of some big cities). Also, WHICH area of the country do you prefer?

In my little town, $150k will get you a nice home 3-4 bedroom home. It will probably be 20 years or older that will need some updating, but still a nice home.
