So, I have done frame repair. Restorations. Thinking about doing my own frame modifications and make a early Goldwing much like a Honda Valkyrie. Any ideas, years to avoid?

I think it can be done, but I don't know that it would be worth the hassle.

Stripping an older GL of its bags can be done, but boy are they ugly. If you really want one try to find a first gen GL1100 with no bags. At least they were made that way.

Once you start taking plastic off of a GL, there are no body panels, and not very esthetically pleasing underneath. Don't forget the fuel tank is under the seat, and the whole "tank" is just a platform.

For the PITA value, buy a Valk.

Gosh, I forgot how great the older 'wing looked before it got all bloated with plastic.

I had an '86 and wanted to do the same idea that the OP had. It would be a disaster. The cost would be insane.

I'd personally look for an old GL1000 that's already naked...Great looking bike, even if it came with bags and a trunk, at least you'd be able to source parts (although somewhat difficultly) as opposed to having to fab EVERYTHING. One of the coolest bikes i've ever seen was an old GL1000 cafe racer...Had the gattilin gun exhaust, which was a tad odd...but the bike itself was amazing!

If your plan was to swap the modern powerplant into the older chassis, well...that might be even more work than the previously mentioned stuff...have no idea if you can shoehorn that large six into the older chassis.

You know, you could get a first-generation Wing, and dead stock it's fairly similar to a Valkyrie, in terms of being a naked, shaft drive, big-cc bike.

I personally like the old 4-cylinder wings better myself than the big 6 that they make now. Current generation wing is redundant to my MG-B.

That is what I have been thinking lately, a nice 4 cyl GL1000. Bikes are great as you can pick up old low mile bikes very reasonably. I do not want a newer huge bike, I like the older vintage bikes.

I have always drooled on MGA's, a neighbor had a twin cam when I was young. Friend of mine had a nice Austin Healey 100 6.

My wife was looking at a old 200cc Honda at her friends apartment, she asked if it was for sale. The guy wanted too much for the bike as it was in poor shape, she said thanks I will keep looking. He now has moved the bike as he thinks she is out to steal it, haha. Always good to be careful but that one was silly.
