I had an 883 sportster that was modded with pipes, jetted correctly and hi-flow airfilter. My 400 burgman is a faster bike than that Sportster. I can only laugh when motorcycle people laugh at scooters

Toyman - try it on for size. I cannot reach the ground from that tall seat on that thing.

Go to some track days and you'll see that tons of 4X year olds ride sportbikes.

Also, you should know that the middle-aged guys who get into bikes are the highest risk group out there. A lot of them think that they can ride because they had a bike 15 years ago and know some basics, don't wear full gear, and generally overestimate their skills.

And at 47, your bones don't heal nearly as well... Be careful out there.

check out the yamaha FZ1
uses the same motor as the R1, just built for street use. (heaver crank, milder cams).
has handle bars so you sit more up-right. (better for the back).

Sports bikes are uncomfortable at any age, on your back, wrists shoulders, due to the riding position. It gets worse as you get older.

Personally I would never ride a cruiser as I love bikes. They can't corner, are slow, can't do proper off road etc. The Harleys are the worst of the lot: bad brakes, vibrate, noisy, poor performance.

There are other choices besides sports bikes and cruisers. If you like speed check out bikes that have plenty of power and comfortable seating positions like the BMWs, Vstroms, Super Teneres, Multistrada etc.

This thread is a few days old but....I met someone at the trackday yesterday who was 78. He was one of the faster guys in the intermediate group. Great to see an old timer out there with his knee down at 80mph.

Well you know the old saying ' there are old bikers and bold bikers but no old bold bikers'. The fact that this ou toppie is 80 and still alive riding means he knows his business.

I'm 47 and ride a GSXR. I ride that thing all over, in the mountains, and to work. I have no issues with back pains or wrist pains. And I ride from fill up to fill up with no breaks in between. I guess it depends on what shape you're in.
