After many years and 150,000 miles of white line I ran across this U tube that agrees with what I know.......safer to be on the white line than not......CA is one of the only if not the only states where it is largely legal (never had a problem).
A well-timed opening of the car door would cure the desire to "lane split". If I had a clunker, it would be worth losing a door.
The practice is no different than cars passing on the berm. It's giving the finger to other drivers that your need to get somewhere fast is more important than theirs.
Thankfully, it's illegal in every state BUT California. What were they THINKING???
One little nudge to the edge of YOUR lane, or a timely opening of the door to get some fresh air into the car while you "stop and go" along ends that arrogant desire to pizz everyone else off real quickly. It's even more effective if the rider has also decided to violate the helmet law.
I have been watching some videos about various bikes. I see the California biker doing it. The one that made me itch the most was the box truck at the stop sign to make a right turn when the biker in the video pulls up on the right side of the truck to make the same right turn. Yes, the bike is faster and more maneuverable.
Ft Lauderdale has ONE tunnel in the whole city. Group of bikers were flying through the tunnel/lane splitting. One guy picked off a mirror and went down..........others piled on and the original fallen rider was paralyzed for life.
Convinced me years ago, lane splitting is not worth the risk
I think lane splitting should be illegal. Seen enough IRL and dash cam videos that prove it's super dangerous. Plus, I know my bike and my body won't win, against a car or truck.
My thought, a motorcycle has just as might right to the 12 feet of lane as a four wheeled vehicle. In case of a contingency. Or an escape route for the bike in case something goes wrong. The "what if" and worse case scenario are something the rider always has to have in the back of their mind.
Enjoyed watching every one of those idiots get their well deserved punishment.
