I am having my bike customized and the shop is going to lend me a bike while they are working on mine (about a month). I have a softail, and the owner suggests that I borrow a rigid just to try something different, but he is leaving it up to me. Anyone out there ride a rigid? What are your thoughts?

It's only a month, so I will probably go with it either way, but I would still like to hear other people's opinions.

If you want to recreate the best handling and most comfortable ride of 70+ years ago ... go for it.

IMO, however, motorcycle technology has come a long way from that while still retaining good looks and styling.

But if you're just looking for show, ridgid and girder can be a nice starting point. I just wouldn't want to ride it ... not at all.

I can think of more pleasant ways to prove my manhood than hurting my back. You can get the rigid look with the Softail without the pain. I sure wouldn't want to ride a rigid far, and long distance riding is my favorite thing to do.

Well again, my bike is a softail. In fact, part of my customization is that I am getting a chopped hugger rear fender and they are going to mount it to the swing arm instead of the frame so it can get REAL close to the rear tire. It will look even more like a rigid chopper then.

So I wonder why the shop owner is pushing me toward borrowing the rigid? He says after having the rigid for a month, I wont want to go back to my softail. Is he just a purist or something?

I know your bike is a Softail...it already looks like a rigid to all but the hardcores. I don't understand why you would even consider changing it. I'd say the shop owner is a purist. Personally, I don't think shocks are ugly anyway!

A purist or a masochist.

I value my lower back too much for a rigid.

I have never ridden a rigid bike, except of course a bicycle - I'd say go on and try it, but do ask the shop owner if you can swap "loaner" bikes if you don't like the rigid.

The roads you ride on, your speed, the rear tire and it's pressure, and particularly the seat on the rigid will either add up to a ride you like, or, they wont'. And of course it depends on your expectations and attitude - if you were a Road Glide owner, and rode 2 up a lot and/or rode long distances, I would predict you wouldn't like the rigid.

Maybe better yet, see if you can cop a short demo ride on the rigid, you will probably know in a few minutes if it's something you would like to give a longer audition to.

Very cool.
Part of the customization of my softail cross bones I am doing involves mounting a chopped, hugger fender right to the swing arm so it looks just like a rigid, but with the benefit of hidden rear suspension. You cant mount a hugger to the frame of a softail because the rear wheel will keep slamming into it with every bump. I am also adding panhead rocker box covers.
