I just watched this on Movie On Demand. I have not read the book(s).
I thought this was very well done. I would definately recommend it.
I would be one in the camp of "why bother to make an english speaking remake when this was so good?" I won't feel compelled to watch the remake, certainly not pay money for it.
The sequal Girl who played with Fire is also on Movie on Demand. It did not rate as highly on Rotten Tomatoes. Sounds like the sequel was either done in a more commercial vein and lost something in the process, did not follow the books as closely, or it did but the book wasn't as good.
Anyone seen it?
1. Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, Swedish: Män som hatar kvinnor (Men Who Hate Women)
2. Girl who Played with Fire, Sw: Flickan som lekte med elden (same as in English)
3. Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, Sw: Luftslottet som sprängdes (The Air Castle/Fiction that Blew Up)
#2 is certainly worth watching, and reading. Novels 2 and 3 are really just one whole story, chopped in half, so they should be read together. I have nothing against a Hollywood remake, but it will be a different story, as invariably happens. I do wish they'd kept the Salander actress--she steps right out of the pages.

I thought the first one was really good, awesome story, great characters.
One thing that annoyed me was the evil Nazis/poor Jews angle in yet another movie. Enough already.
Second one, I didn't like so much.
I have not seen the third one "The Girl who kicked the sh.t out of Everyone" I revised the title after seeing the previews that reminded me of "Bourne Identity" series.
I have posted this before on my impression on the Swedish versions of this series:
Girl with Dragon Tattoo, is the first book and movie. Movie is shot and edited as (in?) homage to Film Noir style detective movie. very late 1940's or very early 1950's
Girl who played with Fire is shot and edited in 1960's style of International Spy Thriller. Think 'Iprcress File; or 'Funeral In Berlin'; Cold War realism type films.
From a movie review on "Hornets Nest", I gather the 3rd movie will be a court room drama. Ties up loose ends, collapse of evil doers house of cards. Mid to late 1970's to 1990's.
3rd movie should be in movie art-houses this month. In my city, Portland OR, starts November 19th, weekend before Thanksgiving. In book anyway, lead female character is very subdued (hospital and jail) until after courtroom verdict.

Completely agree.
Loved Dragon Tattoo.
I streamed the sequel, Played With Fire, and could not finish it, but that might just be me--was tired that night.
Might not bother seeing the American version of Dragon Tattoo.
BTW
This was one of those times where I preferred the movie to the book.
OMFG, so typical of Hollywood to pick some young pretty princess even for this type of a role. What a huge effing mistake. they do not realize why Noomi Rapace fit so well for that role, definitely not due to her hot or pretty looks. she has that angry, abused lesbian goth hacker girl vibe about her that even though she is hella unattractive to me, that some look/vibe also made her awesome for the role.
A relative unknown or not dumb.ss American producers and movie-makers have to pick a visually appealing person for a role, instead of casting based solely on the character in the story/book.
I do not care to see the American version(s). The original version(s) were awesome, so what is the point (as some of you said)?
After my own post I realized that even if Noomi IS Lisbeth Salander, they wouldn't be able to pick her for the American versions--by now she's too old. Lisbeth needs to look like a 15-year old with street smarts, according to the book. Harsh reality of movie making!
Ah, the point of remaking the movies? $$$$$$$$! A proven formula, bestselling books--Hollywood is salivating!
