It takes a slam dunk movie to get me out of my living room and into an expensive, crowded, noisy and often filthy multiplex these days.
But there are a few directors out there whom I know to be superior artists of their craft, and if any one of them actually gets a movie made and into the theater -- I'm there.
My very small list includes:
David Fincher - Se7ven, Social Network. Girl W/ GRagon Tatoo looks awfully good.
Christopher Nolan - Memento, Inception, Dark Knight
Woody Allen - Too many to list. Yes, he's put out some less than stellar efforts lately, although Midnight in Paris was lovely. I would still rather see one of his movies than 99% of the other directors out there.
Ethan and Joel Cohen -Again, too many to list.
Steven Soderbergh - Always interesting.
Lisa Cholodenko - High Art, Laurel Canyon, The Kids are All Right. Her films are a bit uneven, but always interesting.
The Coen Brothers top the list for me. Others include
- Steven Spielberg
- James Cameron
- Jerry Bruckheimer (producer)
- Ron Howard
- M. Knight Shyamalan (he is a hit or miss, some of his movies suck real bad while some are awesome, so got to read the user reviews first on various sites before heading out, although I end up watching the bad ones on Netflix/Redbox anyway).
I am sure there are others but these are the ones whose names are popping up in my mind atm.
Edit: Martin Scorcese, can't believe I forgot to mention him initially !! Thanks Mark S., system won't let me send rep as I sent some already your way.
Of those already mentioned I'll second:
David Fincher
Christopher Nolan
Joel Coen
Steven Spielberg
Ron Howard
Martin Scorsese
And I'll add, in no particular order:
Quentin Tarantino
Francis Ford Coppola
Clint Eastwood
Oliver Stone
Mike Nichols
Michael Moore & Errol Morris for their 'documentaries'
Tim Burton (maybe)
Check out his Hugo 3D that's in the theaters right now when it comes out in DVD/Blu-Ray... fantastic movie, very different from usual Martin Scorsese action-types though, its like very slow story-telling, but the visuals, the plot acting are all fantastic. I am sure this one will garner a few Oscar nods and most likely win some too !
I'll be the oddball.
French directors: Claude Chabrol and Francois Truffaut.
They're both dead, though. I was thinking the OP was looking for living directors who would get people into theaters today? If not, my list would grow exponentially!
