Why are they releasing the first two parts in Dec. 2012 and Dec. 2013, but then the third part in July 2014? Just seems funny. Also the seven months is only barely enough time to release the film and then give people time to see the DVD etc.

I didn't know it was a trilogy but that's good news if these are anything like LOTR I'm sure I'll love them all. But yeah agreeing with the 2nd poster about the timing...that sounds logical

In case you are not aware, all 3 will be offered in a new Hi-Tech 3D that I saw previewed in my last theater visit. It is like you are sitting in the same room with the characters - AWESOME
Even more awesome is it will be available in 3D IMAX.

Reason: Add info
The real question is, how do they justify splitting what is a very slender book to begin with? It's shorter than any of the individual volumes of LoTR.

Regarding the timing of the releases:
The Hobbit had always been planned (by the producers) to be done as two parts, and that what they shot and are releasing.
If you look at: The Hobbit (film series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(and this was news to me too), it says that they had enough extra stuff shot that they decided to film yet more and put this extra stuff into a third Hobbit film. The extra work and shooting is why 1/3 and 2/3 come out so close together, but then there's a delay until 3/3 is released.

That's what I don't get.
I fear that there's going to be lots of walking and walking and walking...

No,there's stuff from the Appendices in the movies,as well as stuff that happens during the Hobbit but isn't mentioned in the book.
