I watched this old gem on Youtube. "Rollerball" from 1975. Now there's a movie that could be remade. It paints a pretty bleak of the future and was actually pretty well made. Its also looking to be disturbingly prophetic.
" Logan's Run" 1976. Again a pretty good movie.
"Soylent Green" 1973. This is another movie that never gets shown. Why?
"Sleeper" 1973. Okay, it was slapstick but had some LMAO moments. Diane Keaton brought the movie down, though.
The 1970s seemed to have a handle on dystopia themed futures that are lacking today.
" Escape From New York", "The Road Warrior", they fell towards the tail end of the genre but you get the idea.

I think Rollerball was remade a few years ago.

Logan's Run is a great movie. I've been hearing for years that a remake is in the works, but nothing ever comes of it.

The Road Warrior is being remade now. I think it comes out later this year or early next.

My general feeling on remakes is that you need to do it in order to make it better, or to put a new spin on it. A remake just for the sake of a remake ... why? But there are lots great stories that could be done differently. Such as:

JAWS. Instead of a shark terrorizing a Long Island town, set it in the Middle Ages and make it a dragon. Instead of a sheriff, a crusty old salt, and a marine biologist, make your heroes a king's ranger, a grizzled old knight, and a monk.

DRACULA has been dozens and dozens of times. But the novel has never been done accurately. Not once. Do it.

TREASURE ISLAND would be a great space opera. And not the awful travesty Disney tried a few years ago. Make it a 100% science fiction movie with the basic story of TREASURE ISLAND. It is the great action/adventure story ever written. Put it in a different setting, and you've got gold.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY. Take the exact same story, but set it during the Crusades or the downfall of the Roman Empire.

AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. A classic, yes. But let's be honest: The ending was horrible. Remake the moving, only give it a decent finale this time.

It was. It sucked.

Wouldn't mind seeing a new version of Logan's Run tho. Post-apocalyptic is always good to watch.

no more re-makes, reinventions, reimaginings or re-anything, maybe Hollywood can come up with something original for once

There's no such thing as an original story. Probably hasn't been for 10,000 years.

NO! Leave them alone and stop with remakes, which are always awful.

How are these "lost"? I thought this thread was going to be about something like the lost Von Stroheim movies.

That's not true at all. There have been lots of remakes that were as good or better than the originals. Just off the top of my head:

Ocean's Eleven
King Kong
The Thing
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
The Maltese Falcon
The Departed
True Lies
The Fly
A Fistful of Dollars
The Magnificent Seven
