That is, is Romania the new destination for making cheapie films? A number have been shot there already.

Just like Italy gave us "spaghetti westerns", will Romania give us "Dracula sci-fi"?

You may not be old enough to remember 27 years ago when Spain and Portugal joined the European Union. These countries became hotbeds of economic activity almost overnight as companies rushed to take advantage of the lower wages.

It's been 6.5 years since Romania joined the EU. You may be seeing some of the same combination of relative ease of transport, cheaper labor, and scenic locations.

The varied and daring geography, including the Carpathian Mountains, the opening to the Black Sea and the Danube Delta, makes Romania a perfect destination for shooting/producing a film or a commercial.
You can find medieval towns - Sibiu, Cluj, Brasov, Sighisoara; imposing castles, painted monasteries in the Northern Bucovina and wooden churches in Transylvania.

Bucharest, is an eclectic mix of architectural styles able to satisfy any set design needs: modern or inter-war buildings, gloomy and interesting urban landscapes that evoke the communist years.

Very true. Michael Palin has made a series of travelogues, available on Netflix, and in his series "The New Europe," Romania's attempts to become an active part of the E.U. make a fascinating hour.
