First I would like to say that both movies are the top contenders to be the greatest westerns ever filmed. But I guess I will give the greatest to Shane. Its a classic. If you think that there were greater westerns filmed list them. I would like to see your opinions.

"Shane" was a bit too corny for my tastes, it does not crack my top ten.

Best ever? I make it:

1) High Plains Drifter
2) True Grit (original)
3) The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
4) Lonesome Dove
5) From Noon to Three
6) The Outlaw Josey Whales
7) Cat Ballou
8) The Hallelujah Trail
9) Unforgiven
10) Tombstone

Well, "High Noon" didn't make the cut either.

Shane and HN are up there in the wetsern movie canon. I know Woody Allen has Shane up there as one of his greatest flicks. But some put 'The 'Searchers' up there as well. Certainly since it has great visuals, a powerful story and characters. One of Ford's masterpeices.

I can't choose they are both so good. The deeper themes of High Noon and the heartfelt story of Shane. Both were stories of integrity honor and doing what you have to do. Keeping your moral center when all about you are in doubt.

They were both a cut above the fort apache, searchers, westerny type stories not to insult them because I loved them too

makes me want to join netflix and pull some of these up

They were both great movies, but I'd have to give Shane a very slight edge.

My top 10 western lost:

1) The Outlaw Josey Wales
2) Dances With Wolves
3) Open Range
4) Wyatt Earp
5) Unforgiven
6) The Big Country
7) The Magnificent Seven
8) High Plains Drifter
9) Shane
10) The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Will Penny
Culpepper Cattle Company
Heartland
Big Trees
Little Big Man-although a tongue in check parody is in my opinion the best represenation of the post-Civil War West of myth.

Are more my taste as to what a western is.

SHANE is one of the greatest Westerns ever made. HIGH NOON is a good Western, though it wouldn't make my Top 10.

The best Westerns ever made are:

1.) The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
2.) Unforgiven
3.) The Outlaw Josey Wales
4.) The Magnificent Seven
5.) Lonesome Dove
6.) High Plains Drifter
7.) Dances with Wolves
8.) Tombstone
9.) Shane
10.) Rio Bravo

Shane was a great movie. Certainly Allan Ladd's best movie. Also can't help thinking when I have watched it about the tragic deaths of both Ladd and the boy(well known child actor who's name now escapes me).
High Noon was good, but I think was pushed a lot frankly as a middle finger to HUAC and McCarthy. kind of ironic considering Gary Cooper was a conservative Republican.

The boys name was Branden De Wilde. He died in a car accident on the way to a movie where he was to act a part where he dies in a car accident. All actors have died included Jean Arthur.
