I really don't get why people point this out all the time. I couldn't find the threads on C-D, there's always an influx of new ideas and interactions when you ask the question to a different crowd, and this is my personal and genuine curiosity. Anyway, thank you for your contributions. I have heard great things about the French Connection.

What I'm noticing is almost all the movies mentioned in here are from the 1970's with a few from the 1980's. Is it just an old crowd commenting on this thread? Or are there no more recent and modern movies with great car chase scenes anymore?

More realism, no CGI. Car chases today don't have the same soul that they once did. Everything is about defying physics nowadays. Many actors actually did their own stunts (i.e. - Steve McQueen), also something we don't see today.

Very true.

Also, today the footage is simply sped up during most car chases to make look more realistic than it really is. Higher insurance premiums and stunt performers being unwilling to risk serious injury or death as much (thankfully) are probably the main reasons for this.

Remember, the movie itself doesn't have to be good at all, just looking for a great car chase scene. Please share!
Fast and furious 5 i think!

Bullitt has always been considered the iconic chase scene. It's always been my favorite.

Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry was very good.

As was:

The French Connection.

You hit my favorites on your list... Bullitt takes the prize because of the sound of the 390.

The stunning thing about the French Connection car chase scene is that the director did not have a permit to film a high speed car chase scene on the streets of NYC. They paid a $40,000 fee equivalent to a bribe to get permission to use a NY elevated subway train that was involved in the chase scene, but they did not have the streets closed to traffic or did not have any intersections closed for the car chase. The stunt driver drove 90 miles an hour down city streets and blasted through countless red lights for two miles among all the normal vehicle traffic. Most of the cars you see in the car chase scene were not "movie extras", they were real, local car traffic along the streets where the car chase was being filmed. This would never happen in this era due to the extreme legal liability and danger to the public. It was almost a miracle that nobody was badly injured or killed when the French Connection car chase was filmed.
