What I found "soul crushingly" disappointing in that movie was the fact that he left the island at all. He had everything he needed to survive, and decided to risk his life on the open sea just because he was lonely for other people! If I were there all alone and had developed all the survival skills he had, I'd never try to leave the island. I'd just live contentedly. But I have no innate craving for the company of other people. They're fine in appropriate doses, but I could live quite nicely without them, if I had water, food, and shelter.
And he had do-it-yourself-dentistry.
But with all kidding aside, you probably wouldn't have understood a movie like Passengers.
This is a relatively obscure film, but "Amexicano", starring Raul Castillo, which I was really enjoying...until the ending. Tragic ending. Logical. But tragic. Literally changed the way in which I looked at illegal immigration.
I first saw "The Last American Virgin" when I was a teenager back in the '80s and the ending was devastating. I still think of it as a heartbreaking ending, especially with the song excellent they played at the end.
Absolutely right!
I remember this movie well to this day because of that ending.
