For example I have long taught the movie AI would have been a lot better if it ended (not spoiling anything) afer the scene near the end underwater rather then having the rubbish ending it has.
Some do, some need to be longer, others are fine length-wise. It depends how the story was told and if there weakpoints in specific scenes or they seemed like they missed a scene or two. 2003's Daredevil for instance didn't capture the esence of Matt Murdoch outside of the director's cut which extended the story and included a courtcase which made the story MUCH better.
For the most part, movies are like paintings. After the final stroke, and the artist signs his/her name, it's done. Then someone says why don't you do something about Mona Lisa's smile. ...
Lord of The Rings (the first one because I never went to see another). I could not wait for that movie to end not because it was so awful but because it was too long. It would have been better with an intermission.

It was just slow. I tried watching Fellowship of the Ring and they just never got out of first gear in the first hour. By that point I gave up and I rarely do that.

I liked A.I., and the ending it had was the ending it needed. The whole Blue Fairy / Pinocchio schtick was was too heavy through the whole movie. But once that had been established, the story couldn't just drop it.
2001: A Space Odyssey should have been a 40 minute movie. It had about 30 minutes of story and 10 minutes of style. Sadly, it ended up a 9 hour movie. At least it felt like a 9 hour movie.
Once Upon A Time in the West is a great movie. But it have easily been 30 minutes shorter. Way too many scenes have the pace of a snail crossing a pool of molasses.

I agree 100% on 2001 it did feel like a 9 hour movie alright
I agree as well with Armendmo on Inception.

the Dune movie is very long-winded, I think the book itself too complex to be adapted well to movies.

With the lord of the rings: The fellowship of the rings movie I don't think it could have been helped (The book itself has very little in the way of action compared to the second and third books) the action scene at the end of the movie is actually taken from the start of the second book.
