Charles laughton lives in a mansion but, under no circumstance he is to be seen entering the property by the front gate. By pushing a panel in the fence ,him and his dog enter the courtyard. In the courtyard there's a manhole. He opens the manhole and both him and his dog proceed to descend to the basement of the house. Once inside, they climb the stairs to the upper floor, happy to be back home.

That's all I remember ,being too young to stay awake
Can you name the title of this movie?
thank you.
