Terminator Genisys made $440 million against a budget of $155 million. Terminator Salvation made $360 million against $200 million.
The idea is to make money.
Studios generally put forth a combination of tried-and-true ideas/brands along with taking some chances, which are generally higher risk but much cheaper to make. A good example of this was the first Terminator, in 1984, which made $78 million while costing $6 million.
That's how it works. Those cash cows bankroll the 'original' ideas that are financial reaches.
The problems is not the films but the current trending occurring around the films. Terminator 2 was done when the USA was at peace and our privacy was not an issue. Where Clinton stuck his Clinton was the issue and OJ Simpson on the run was a marathon. We need to go back to that time first then we can celebrate by going to the movies.
Just wash all the bs under the rug and let us enjoy terminator. Nope not going to happen. Maybe if Sophia Stewart actually had more say in what goes on in her own works. Nope not going to happen. Terminator 2 the play might actually be something good. If they can do Aladdin why not Terminator on ice?
You missed the best ones then: Aliens and T2 were much better than the originals. I agree with Predator being the best.
Aliens was just another banal action film, whereas Alien was a subtle and nuanced fusion of science fiction and horror. The second film's only redeeming feature is that it sucks less than the franchise's subsequent installments.
Terminator 2 was fine in the production, but the last half of the film - a running pursuit/battle along a freeway, followed by a final showdown in an industrial building - is exactly what happened in the first film.
