I'm in the middle of re-watching this film, after having seen it three or so times since it was released in the 80's. It's very beautiful, very moving, and I can't understand why it's not more popular.
I saw Desert Bloom (1986) on DVD many years ago. It's a solid, well-done period piece, set in the 1950's. The setting (NM) and era (post-WW II) are interesting - however, IIRC it's an overall depressing film & I can see why it's not more popular.
Jon Voight & Annabeth Gish did a great job in the film. I'm especially a fan of AG, who is great in everything I've seen her in (the latter seasons of the original X-files series, etc.) - however, she's a fairly underrated actress.

Try it again -- it's not depressing.
