My first thought was the same - odd choice. However, I have seen some still shots of Renee made up as Judy and, at least resemblance wise, it works.
I don't agree. Renee is nothing like Judy Garland at all. Plus she is too big to play the fragile Judy at the end of her life.
I have seen a couple of clips on you-tube, and I'm not impressed with the imitation of Judy, or the singing. I do like Renee Zellweger, and wanted to like her in this role, but it's not for me.
Renée Zellweger knows what it’s like to be a public target. At 50, she’s lived half of her life in the spotlight, weathering tabloid stories about her weight, plastic surgery and high-profile relationships with men like Jim Carrey and Kenny Chesney.
So when it came to playing Judy Garland — a performer whose struggle with substance abuse, financial troubles and custody battles were all grist for the mill — little surprised the actress.

Seems an odd choice just right off the bat...we shall see...
The film is based around the last years of Judy Garland's life when she was performing and living in London, and it shows her looking back and reminiscing on her life. It seems to be a film tinged with sadness and by the end Garland was only a shadow of her former self, as years of addiction had taken it's toll on her. She was eventually found dead in the her London home in 1969.

As well as Judy Garland, other fading Hollywood leading ladies that died in London include Vivien Leigh (1967), Ingrid Bergman (1982) and Ava Gardner (1990).
Although she may actually end up like Judy, Ariana Grande could play her. She has the voice and did a great send up of her on SNL.
