This thing was filmed in 2018, and I have to say I was looking forward to it being my first cinema outing since Covid in a couple months. At this rate, there won't be any movie theatres left to show it when it finally does get released.

In an earnings call earlier this year, Adam Aron stated that AMC can still float their debt well into next year, I believe. I hope this damn movie gets released before then.

Yeah, me too. Along with the new Dune. I "think" the latter is due out Oct 22, and I'm leery of being in a confined space at that point given what's going on. Acknowledging each of us has our own Bug-related risk profile for ourselves and families.

Might/might-not tough it out until '22 m'self. I had a tradition of going to the movies Halloween night that was canceled last year ('20), but then again so was Halloween. We shall see what's playing, if anything. Anywhere. I see my local iPic isn't planning that far ahead at-current, which while sad seems prudent.

I just saw the movie today, and it was a very good movie. Worth the wait.

It was such a good movie and I wasn’t even planning on seeing it. I’m not a fan of Tom’s religion but my friend wanted to go so I did. It made me remember the 80s when we loved our country, respected the sacrifice our military (and their families) made for our country’s security, and were not apologetic to be Americans. I’m very heartened that it is so popular in this day and age of exaggerated wokeness.

I personally don't let a person's religion influence my opinion of them. I jut live and let live. It's only if the person tries to impose their religion on me, that it becomes a factor in my opinion or relationship with the. Cruise is just a great actor, he plays to the character of the movie. Cruise is unlike some actors who seem to just play the same version of the same character in every movie. For example. I love Jason Statham, but he always plays the same gut in every movie. Cruise was so good in Tropic Thunder that none of us in my group didn't even knew it was him, until I figured it out, almost halfway thru the film.

Agree. I was never a big fan but we are watching old movies with our kids and they wanted to see Top Gun before seeing Maverick. So now we are on to the Mission Impossible movies. I am enjoying them more than I thought I would. After recent years woke crap, these seem great in comparison.

I enjoyed both Top Gun movies, all of the Mission Impossible movies, Knight and Day, the Jack Reacher movies, The Firm, etc. The only one I can think of that I didn't like is Vanilla Sky, but that was more for the content than his acting.
There are actors are truly transform into their characters, Cruise is one of them. I have no clue what Tom Cruise is like as a person, because every movie I see him in, he's a completely different person. so how can people not like him, when they don't know him?

There are actors who aren't very talented. They seem to play themselves in every single movie they are in. So if you didn't like the John Wayne character, you'll not like him in his next movie because he's still playing John Wayne. Gwyneth Paltrow is always playing Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jennifer Lawrence is always playing the same character. So if these women seem dull, or insufferable in one movie, it won't get and better watching them in their next movie.

I finally sat down and watched this. After all the hype over this movie, I was expecting a great movie.

It was not.

The aerial dogfight scenes were FANTASTIC in terms of film making. Really some of the best I have ever seen. Actually filming in actual jets made all the difference. CGI still has nothing on reality.

Say what you will about Tom Cruise's personal life, but the man can act. His performance in the movie is above reproach.

Many scenes are BEAUTIFULLY directed. The lighting, the framing ... masterful. In fact, some scenes were so beautiful that I stopped paying attention to the dialogue. Which was probably a good thing, because...

The rest of the movie isn't very good at all. The other characters are paper thin, some to the point of caricature. The "love interest" was just put in for the sake of having a love interest. Cruise and Connelly had no chemistry at all, and the script never really gave them any real moment to connect. Jennifer Connelly's character could have been completely cut from the movie, and it wouldn't have made any appreciable difference. Not her fault. The script was a dud for her character. And for most of the other characters, to be honest. Scene after scene was just one character "flexing" their coolness.

And the plot itself was cartoonishly silly. It really was a throwback to the '80s in terms of the central plot making absolutely no sense, and no one seeming to care. If Act 3 would have been resolved by Murtaugh and Riggs teaming up with Rambo to rescue Maverick, I wouldn't have blinked, because the rest of the movie was so dumb.

And the director STILL seems to think that shirtless characters dunked in oil then frolicking on the beach counts for character development.

So I am a little baffled why everyone loved this movie so much. Twenty minutes of great dogfights and beautiful cinematography don't make for a good movie. This movie still amounted to great tomato slices and a pretty box, but you still had to eat the rest of the Whopper.
