Fun to listen to a Hollywood A-lister complain that no one will come see his movie in a theater.

It's a feel good picture, you know, about single woman that struggles with mental health issues. I totally want to pay good money to see that in a theater after dealing with real people day in and day out that are struggling with mental health issues.

I'm not against serious movies, and when I was young was more favorable to movies with a very serious subject matter. Perhaps it's the real-world experiences I've piled up in the last 30 years, but once you've dealt with death and struggled for real to keep a roof over your head and to stay on the right path, and as many people you know just seem crazier and crazier by the day...if I go to a show I just want to be entertained for a couple of hours. So much of what they're churning out these days is NOT entertaining.

I too fear for the future of cinema, because they're dependent on a myopic, navel-gazing industry for all their product.

I have seen the previews for this movie. It screams OSCAR BAIT. It's made for critics and awards, not for audiences. Is it any wonder there is no audience?

Well, first of all, there are the kinds of movies to which one takes children, and the kinds one attends with a date. Maybe this is neither? Upper Middle Class people, and "intellectuals", are AFRAID to go to theatres, these days. Except for galas in restored old movie palaces, and walk-through inspections of theatres which exist as outparcels on commercial properties, I haven't been inside a theatre since 'The Age of Innocence', in the early Nineties (when some White Trash teens threatened us, as we neared our car, after I'd had the nerve to turn around to see who was making so much noise behind us.) I'm hardly alone. The kind of people who would enjoy a serious movie about a serious subject, are too afraid of theatre audiences.

The kinds of movies which get good Box Office, are for people too stupid to realize the danger they're in (the Action/Thriller/Blood-&-Gore garbage market), in theatres, and for people too desperate for it to matter (divorcees entertaining their kids during weekend custody, and people on dates).

One presumes that profit resides in the rental/PAY TV market. So, why is this zhlub kvetching?

Not that this would appear to be a movie worthy of better minds. The few seconds of preview which repeated on the screen, made it look like just another Feel-good Interracial Exploitation Flick.

Then, there's the guy talking about his movie. His hairstyle is repulsive. Why, when you have a full head of hair, do you show all that forehead? And why does a grown man wear bluejeans? ...particularly one who looks so lousy in bluejeans? And why is he so bloated and out-of -shape (working in an industry saturated with insiders' access to proven fitness and diet strategies)? Seeing HIM, would not entice me into "checking-out" the film.

None of his other clothing choices are very wise, either. Why did this guy choose a visual mode of expression, as his career? Why did he choose a creative field, at all?

I didn't watch the clip. I didn't listen to what he had to say.

Just read a brief rundown of the movie's plot, and boy is it something I have zero desire of ever seeing. Yet another boring woke romantic drama whatever movie.

It's rich that someone that makes an utter shyte movie that no one wants to see, then whines about no one wanting to see it and trying to relate that to the decline in people not wanting to go to movie theaters anymore.

Look at Avatar 2. Despite the haters crowing early on about how dismal the movie was an a box office 'flop,' in fact Avatar came roaring back and has incredible legs, and is nearing $2 billion in worldwide ticket gross. That is incredible in so many ways, and it was a beautiful movie I thoroughly enjoyed. If people made movies that entertained and made them escape from this dreary world, then they will go see it. Make woke garbage, and no one will see it.

Sounds like a load of grim woke nonsense, and even the critics have called it disappointingly mundane.

Why would I want to see a film about a mentally ill woman in Margate, set against a background of supposed racism, which is very unlikely in modern Britain.

It's more like one of those made for TV films by Film4, although even they managed to produce the odd decent film.

Like everyone else, I will wait until this is on television, although even then it sounds so boring that I most likely will give it a wide berth.

Based on the article, he seems to be talking to a large part about the movie industry as a whole....not necessarily his movie. He emphasizes "no one has gone to see them".

He then goes on to say..."'Even though people talk about attendance going up to almost pre-Covid levels across the year, the attendance is for 20 or 25 movies, not for 200 movies. It's for a very small number of big movies"

That doesn't sound like it's an all about me comment at all.

I want to go to the movies but they just refuse to put out a movie that anyone wants to see. Also, I think people have just gotten out of the habit. Before 2020 people just went on the weekends out of habit. Now they have found other things

That is going to take a while.

I am happy to see Hollywood failing. I am hoping someone will start making movies someplace else so that in 10 years there will be an alternative.

I personally think movie theaters should start playing old movies that people may not have seen. I remember in the 80s three were so many good moves... we just took for granted. They should play those.

I read part of the article, but the director’s attitude bothered me- going on about how if you wanted a good quality movie you should expect to pay more for it. He then went on to compare it to restaurants, but the main difference in restaurants is that the really expensive ones get the best ingredients, best chefs, etc. Even then, Noma is apparently closing because that model is no longer sustainable.

With movies, there are a variety of factors. Spending the most money to make the movie doesn’t always result in the best quality product. There are a lot of big-budget movies that were absolute trash, while there are some very low budget movies that are amazing. We’ve also transitioned to having award winning/nominated films that went straight to streaming instead of the theater. The theater made sense 20+ yeares ago when people’s home equipment wasn’t that good. A lot of people now have fantastic TVs, surround sound, etc that simply make staying at home more comfortable.

And you can add to that dealing with people that simply have no etiquette. The last couple of times I went to see a movie, people were texting during the movie (one time, a guy was having a phone conversation).

My hometown is just awful in this area. When there was a movie theater argument resulting in a shooting, I was totally unsurprised. I’ve sat by people who were giving MST3K style commentary, taking off their shoes and giving themselves foot massages, just generally talking or texting throughout… it’s just a nightmare. Who wants to spend $20 to go see a movie only to sit next to someone talking the whole time?
