Finally got round to this. It is really good --- up until the last ten minutes. Despite being a truly great movie for most of its runtime, the ending really fumbles.
It is a classic example of ratcheting up the tension, giving you just enough information to keep you guessing and wondering what's going on. It plays on a lot of the great urban legends of the day --- Satanic cults, the Bohemian Grove, channellers, and there is even a fictional version of James Randi. Acting is all around fantastic. Great writing. They really nail the 1977 setting. Special effects are minimal --- until the end.
And that is where it falls apart. Everything most of the movie did so well, the final 10-12 minutes abandons. All the subtlety goes out the window for a typical effects-laden horror movie shockfest. It's not terrible. It's just disappointing.
And there are some plot threads left dangling. Exactly what happened and why is not clear at all. I don't mind when a story gives us 2 + 2 and leaves it up to us to figure out 4. That's great. But this movie gives us 2 + x - y(z) = 14.2.
So it remains a really good movie. I'd recommend it. Most of it is a lot of fun. I just wish they'd given the final ten minutes another fine tuning.
What a shame. I really still want to see this - they had it at the $7 showing, but the H wasn't into it.
I would still recommend it. Highly. 90% of the movie is great. They just didn't land the ending.
That is a common problem in a lot of movies, but horror movies seem especially afflicted by it. I actually rewatched the 1987 remake of THE BLOB the other night. It, too, is a great movie. Highly recommended. But again, the ending just doesn't work.
For horror / thriller movies, there are actually precious few where the ending is perfection. Off the top of my head, I can name ...
JAWS
THE EXORCIST
THE SIXTH SENSE
SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
THE MIST
CARRIE
THE WICKER MAN (the original)
HALLOWEEN (the original)
We've both seen plenty of movies with the devil in the title, but the one I listed I remember from way back. I also have a fondness for cult movies. If done well, they're really creepy.
On your list, I like The Wicker Man and The Sixth Sense best.
I saw this last night. I am dumber now because of it
