We plan on watching planes, trains, automobiles, nutty professor (eddie murphy version), and beaches.

Any other suggestions for uplifting family orientated movies....comedies or dramas are permitted for this discussion...

Extremely sad but also uplifting at the same time is "Joyeux Noel" about the truce which took place in WW1 in the trenches where the German, French, and British sides came together for a brief period of peace and played football.

A real story about the horrors of war, its inhumanity and yet how for a few hours soldiers permitted themselves the right to be simple human beings for a while.

Poignant and beautifully shot it is one of my favourite movies in recent years.

A Muppets "Christmas Carol" is always a good one for the whole family also as is "Cool Runnings" with John Candy.

I just saw Joyeux Noel--it really is good, and the interview with the director in Special Features is well worth watching.

My old stand-by for the holidays is White Christmas. From IMDB:A successful song-and-dance team become romantically involved with a sister act and team up to save the failing Vermont inn of their former commanding general.
Love the songs, the dancing, and Danny Kaye.

Another fave is the 1994 version of Little Women. It opens at Christmas, and throughout the movie there are gorgeous New England winter scenes. The film has several themes, and what it says about consumption and vanity applies well today. The story concentrates on Jo and her place in the world as a young woman who wants to write for a living.

Beaches ... uplifting??? "I do not think this word means what you think it means." (Inigo Montoya) Maybe it's because I'm a guy, but I wanted to staple my eyes shut after watching that movie.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a tried and true classic. It's both hilarious and touching at the same time. "Those aren't pillows!"

Other good ones:

Groundhog Day
Scrooged
Ghostbusters
A Christmas Story
Gremlins
It's A Wonderful Life
A Christmas Carol
(the one with Patrick Stewart)

Dude Gremlins is not uplifting. I nearly vomited and had nightmares after I saw that movie.

"The Polar Express" is a great family movie at Christmas-time.
