I just came back from seeing Death Race:

1) I'm not in the target demographic by sex or age.
2) I'm not a fan of anyone in the movie.
3) I'm not related to anyone in the movie.
4) I don't play violent video games.
5) This is the most entertaining movie I've seen all summer.

The "look" of the movie is fantastic, too, and there's no director agenda. It's just plain old car violence (stunt guys deserve an award) with a story.

"It may not be possible to make a film with less plot and more action. And the testosterone saturation level has also been pushed to the very limits of earthly possibility. If a movie could drag its knuckles on the ground, "Death Race" would leave eight little tracks in the sand."

What do city critics named Philip (and not Phil) know about testosterone saturation, anyway? It's not like they're exposed to it. They probably twitch when they see racing cars and people with dirt and oil on their faces.

Maybe Philip should have reviewed Brideshead Revisited.

I liked the original Death Race 2000, too.

Is it just me or does it seem Jason Statham only does movies with a driving theme? Italian Job, where he drove the Mini's, Transporter 1-2, and now this.

He does seem to be stuck in the same movie over and over. At least he's easy on the eyes...

going by the trailer, the actors in it, and the apparent plot, i would say the movie sounds like a piece of crap, but you do make a compelling case.

there are some movies that have trailers that are apparently designed to entice 14 year old boys, but then turn out to have a lot more than what meats the eye. Smokin' Aces comes to mind.
