Alright now..is this guy the chameleon of music..first R & B, then a vegas crooner, and next a country singer(and later a folk singer)..each style he excelled at..but I am intriged by Bobby Darrin's country songs..
Reason being, he is more than just SOUNDING country here..he sounds just like Roger Miller, one of the more acclaimed country singers of the time...and I would say that is some incredible country singing..
Here are a few of Darrin's great country songs(BTW, the country stations refused to play them to their loss..They would not play ray Charles, "I can't stop loving you" for the same reasons..they saw Darrin as an outsider..and he was on no country playlists, while he sang his country @ss off, cuting songs most of which were BETTER than the bona-fide country music of the time..
This one sounds as good as anything western sounding Marty Robbins(El Paso) ever sang....so far we have him sounding like Roger Miller, ray Charles, and Marty Robbins....Bobby Darrin is def the musical chameleon!
This one is country honky-tonk, with a little John Sebastain of Lovin' Spoonful sound..and Darrin wrote this one as well..Darrin almost sounds like Leon Redbone here..incredible..
I've been a fan of Bobby Darin for many, many years. I also admire an individual who has two strikes against him as a kid but goes out and makes something out of his life and goes all out for it! He suffered from rheumatic fever as a kid and the doctors thought he would do good to make it to 15.
Interesting group of youtubes here! And he went back and forth with the labels on the above tunes, as he started with Atco Records in the late 50's, switched to Capitol in the early 60's, and went back to Atco-Atlantic in the Fall of '66 when he charted top ten with "If I Were A Carpenter", written by Tim Hardin.
There are a lot of 45's that Darin cut in his years with Capitol that are noteworthy; 18 Yellow Roses, You're The Reason I'm Living, and Venice Blue (had an album by that name as well) are some of my favorites. But he done other stuff on Capitol that defined him in a pop vein, his version of "Hello Dolly" is a great version!
As it was spelled out in the movie "Beyond The Sea", he kind of drifted a tad, and got involved with folk more so than his "If I Were A Carpenter" lp on Atlantic. They were on the Direction label, which (I think) was a subsidiary of Amy Records. They are Commitment and Born Walden Robert Cossoto. Both were released in the late 60's. They didn't press huge quantities of these lp's, and are pretty collectible. As far as that goes pretty much all of Darin's work is popular with 50's and 60's lp collectors.
Speaking of the movie Beyond The Sea, Kevin Spacey done a great job producing the movie and portraying Darin. Surprisingly, the portion of his career where he went to Capitol Records for those four years did not show up in the movie. No matter, it still was a great flick!

Double H, we are STILL forgeting a few things...he was nominated for an academy award in 1963 for Captain Neumann, MD..
He had one of the best variety shows on TV, and did a duet with a different musical guest each week....did a zillion imitations, including Jimmy Durante...wrote many of his own songs, including Dream Lover...
...was one of the great all time entertainers in the world...he filled up the largest theaters in NYC with lines around the block many times in the 60's...something about him just drew people to him..he had what many would call charisma, chutzpah, magnetism....and with a ton of talent wedded on to the same package...

He died just a few months after this performance here on the Midnight Special..actually, he was literally dying while he sang this..Question, how does a dying man play keyboards with the manic intensity of Jerry Leww Lewis at the top of his game? I didn't even know he played piano, let alone that he played boogie woogie and rocked out on it..knew he played a mean harp though..
BTW, he thought his Mother was his sister, and his grandmother was his mom, cause he was told so..was never the same after he found that one out...
he discovered Richard Pryor, Flip Wilson, and Wayne Newton, and even gave Wayne his biggest hit and sig song, "Danke Schoen"...that was written for Bobby, and would have been a sure top 10 hit, but he had the graciousness to give it to wayne to jump start his career, and Newton ended up cracking the top 10 himself with it, and has made hundreds of millions from that fame for many years hence...newton learned ALL of his stage presence from Darin & how to work the audience..
Darin was in the crowd the night Bobby Kennedy was shot in LA at the Ambassador...he was so shocked that he went into seclusion for a year at Big Sur in northern cal..before he did he sold and gave away everything he had, all his clothes, his house, and most of his bank account..and lived in a simple trailer out there...He wrote the following song when he was in seclusion by himself in that trailer, trying to sort everything out..
This is his last performance...they administered oxygen to him throughout the night here, as he was having severe angina attacks...you can see him wince a few times here in pain, though he looks and sounds great..he died a month after this..
There is no grave or burial, as he donated his entire body to science..a thoughtful man to the end....
