. . . It goes like this, boys and ghouls (er, girls) . . . post the original if you know it . . . then, post the one or two most absolutely bizarre covers of that original. This should be mad fun. Or just plain mad. I've been accused of being both . . .

OK, here's choice number one, bearing in mind how whacky the original was in the first place:

The Trashmen, "Surfin' Bird"

And, here are the two whackiest covers I've heard . . .

The Cramps, "Surfin' Bird"

The Ramones, "Surfin' Bird"

OK, ladies and gentlemen . . . it's your turn! (I'm just waiting for the first one who turns up offering the Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and, was it William Shatner or Leonard Nimoy who covered it . . . )

I wish there was a YouTube offering, but back in the day a punk rock group called Manster---it turned up on the old Atlantic LP Live at CBGBs---did a version of the Yardbirds' classic "Over Under Sideways Down."

If you can imagine the song being played at 78 rpm, with the singer inhaling quantities of helium before performing it, that was Manster's version.

Continue . . .
