It was there 2nd last good album. Possibly their best. The Elder was good also as that album displayed tremendous creativity and challenging growth which KISS chose not to embrace because they were sadly content singing about various banal topics. Bob Ezrin tried to push these guys in a better direction and they shunned him. Getting back to Dynasty it was a welcome change. A product of the times. I Was Made For Loving You is splendid catchy number. The 2000 man e Rolling Stones cover is also quite exceptional.
I wasn't alive when they did it....yet I have a soft spot for Kiss....looking back and knowing how Simmons is all about the money, Im still amazed he hasn't tried hip hop, or country, etc etc etc......
I was born in 1987 so about 10 years too late for disco. I hate disco and love Kiss. That said, I Was Made For Loving You is a GREAT dance rock song. I love metal and the harder Kiss stuff but that song is good. Sadly it made people realize how corporate Kiss was.
At first I thought, "whaaaaat?" But, being the loyal KISS fan I was, I bought the album and was very relieved to hear that it was salvaged by Ace sticking to his rock-n-roll roots and doing a cover of "2000 Man" and kicking out "Hard Times" and "Save Your Love." So then I went to see them for my very first concert ever.
For me, the problems really became apparent with Unmasked. No Peter Criss song? Something was wrong. (Turns out, yeah, he didn't play a single track on the whole thing.)
And The Elder, I thought, "This is either going to fix itself or Ace is going to quit the band."
And KISS fans know how that worked out.
BTW, when dictated by Gene and Paul, KISS does whatever music is in vogue, when they bother to put out new studio music. Carnival of Souls was their foray into grunge when grunge was big.

Egad, no. Gene and Paul were all for it. They wanted to do a concept album. They thought it was going to be the next Tommy. Eric had no say in the matter, and Ace hated every second of it. Don't delude yourself about Bob Ezrin. Him "pushing" the band was really cocaine pushing him.
Turns out Ace was right (as usual--notice how his was the only solo album of the four to go platinum?). The reception by the fans was enough to knock some sense into the band's heads, and Creatures of the Night was their return to grace. But by then Ace was battling too many demons in addition to being fed up with the band, and that was the end of that.
KISS was founded as a rock-n-roll show band. That's what they did best. I regret not seeing Eric Carr play live. Once he died, the fire went out. Last time I saw them was 2000, with the original four. Now the band is a joke, sad to say. The whole notion of Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer wearing Peter's and Ace's make-up is ridiculous, and I just don't bother with KISS now.
