I heard this brought up on the radio once that the songs that your parents listened to when you were a kid are the musical equivalent of comfort food. As you grow older you listen to these songs to feel good, just like you can only be satisfied with your mom's meatloaf and mashed potatoes if you crave comfort food. I still remember sitting in the back seat of my parents car and hearing the warm fuzz of the AM radio that played top 40 if my mom was in the car and country if my dad was in the car.
I was into metal and punk in high school and college and hated all of my parents music and I was kind enough to let my parents know how bad their music was. I got kind of embarrassed when my dad saw my stash of Johnny Horton, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and other classic country songs from the 60's and early 70's on my computer. I had a bigger collection of old country than he did.
Has anyone else as they hit middle age start to revert back and listen to the music of their parents? If so, what are you listening too?
I relate micrguy. My Dad lived for country music. Especially Texas swing. He worked in Southeastern New Mexico in the late '40s and on weekends him and my mom would go either to Roswell, Odessa,Lubbock or wherever when Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys would be coming through.Check these prices- cover $1, draw beer 20 cents, motel room $3.50. When he worked in the oil fields he lived for Saturday night concerts at the town grange hall. He also loved Hank Thompson and the Brazo Valley Boys. Also Spade Cooley, Roy Acuff, and Ernie Tubb and the Texas Troubadours. I love the stuff and when I get out that way I'll play those artists. Unless I go through Clovis- then it is Buddy Holly.
Where I work, the TV is always on. Lately the folks I work with have discovered the Rawhide music channel on their satellite dish. I hafta admit that Kitty Wells, Bill Monroe and all those guys named Hank never sounded better.
Heh. My dad listened to my stuff. He liked the Stones.
Music as comfort food for me would include my dad's records: Bill Monroe, Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells (Dad had a crush on her) and Hank Williams: and my mom's scores to Oklahoma! and Swan Lake.
My mom's mostly a jazz fan, and I've never gotten into jazz beyond Dave Brubeck and Vince Guaraldi. Both of whom my mom doesn't like! LOL
When I was a kid, my parents listened to either classical, Big Band and ragtime jazz, or Tony Bennett/Frank Sinatra.
I like all that stuff but out of the three would likely pick classical, first, then Big Band, then Tony.
I don't have too many musical pleasures that I feel guilty about, not because I feel that I have such flawless taste--more because I simply choose to eschew the guilt.
Any songs by Charley Pride, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Engelbert Humperdinck or Dean Martin.
