Northern IL here. I like TONS of music. Mostly anything but rap, R&B, and jazz. I listen to metal, rock, a little country, blues, classical, alternative, oldies, motown, etc, etc.
I went with alternative because it seems all-inclusive. I might've picked folk if it had been listed, since Ani DiFranco is my favorite singer/musician. A lot of singers I like also fall into the indie category too. Like some classic rock, country, and blues as well. I'm from Louisiana.
I'm from Texas and listen mostly to Classic Rock. My daughter and I have this discussion every time we get in the car:
Her: "Mother, can we please listen to music today that was made in the last 10 years?"
Me: "Nope."
Her: "GOD! Why not?!"
Me: "Because there's nothing like the classic stuff. Today's "music" sucks."
This is a regular thing with us. Every so often, I give in, then I'm stuck with Fall Out Boy and Avril Lavigne and I can hardly stand it.
I picked alternative but I really like to listen to early 80's hardcore... Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, Reagan Youth, Black Flag, Bad Brains, all that good stuff.
I'm 20 from Virginia (Hampton Roads - Virginia Beach, to be exact) and I am enjoying Papa Roach currently on my Zune at work. I'm an avid rock and metal fan.
But Metal wasn't a choice...
