In today's time it's easy to look back on the 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's and discern who we thought the great and legendary musicians were. Jimmi Hendrix, The Who, The Beatles from the 60's to name a few, Elton John, Queen, Journey from the 70's to name a few, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and others from the 80's.

My question is, 30 to 40 years from now when people look back on the years 2000-2009 WHO will people remember as the great and legendary artists of that time? I think there are a lot, depending on the genre since music has really expanded since the 60's and 70's so I'll be asking for artists and musicians from each genre.

If you can please try to list at least 5 majorly influential and successful artists from each genre from the years of 2000-2009.

Pop:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Country:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Rap/Hip Hop/R&B:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Rock:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Other:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

If you can't think of 5 that's fine, and if you can think of more than 5 that's fine too. Just looking forward to seeing other people's opinions on this.

there are 100's of talented artists making music today that will never get there due because most people from my generation (70's and 80's) are convinced there is no good music being made now because there is no good 2000's music on the radio.

Thank you.

My parents are from that generation and are convinced that all music today is garbage and generally won't listen to any rock/pop past 1985 crediting the late 80's/early 90's grunge scene with the death of rock and pop just spiraled out of control into the teeny bopper crowd. It's sad, I hope I never turn out that way. I do believe I'm too open minded to allow that to happen though.

I suppose my own list would look something like this:

Pop:
1. Adele
2. Amy Winehouse
3. Lady Gaga
4. Beyonce
5. Rhianna

Country:
1. Alan Jackson
2. Keith Urban
3. Brad Paisley
4. Faith Hill
5. Kenny Chesney

Rap/Hip Hop/R&B:
1. Eminem
2. Kanye West
3. Jay-Z
4. Usher
5. 50 Cent

Rock:
1. Chevelle
2. Fall Out Boy
3. Nickelback
4. Shinedown
5. Linkin Park
6. Green Day
7. Three Days Grace

Other:
1. John Legend
2. Lana Del Rey
3. Kelly Clarkson
4. Hayley Williams
5. Justin Timberlake

Not necessarily my favorite artists or bands by any means, but I truly think most of the ones I listed absolutely bested their genre and were pretty well known for it. Unfortunately the biggest and most well known artists of their time period aren't always the best, but they ARE how that decade will be remembered.

I'm taking from the OP that the persons in question would have come to prominence in the decade of 2000-2009 and not before.

If that is true, it's too early to say.

Maybe Joanna Newsome and Missy Elliot as they carved out niches that others have followed.

While the Flaming Lips were somewhat popular before 2000, I'd include them as they last decade saw their peak popularity. Maybe LCD Soundsystem.

But the criteria for "legendary" changes over time. Here's a leading example: Nobody thought Talk Talk was legendary in the 80s. In fact, they were simply a curiosity towards the end and their work critically panned. Yet their later work was a huge influence on Radiohead, Catherine Wheel, Deathcab for Cutie and others. And today's music critics look back at that same later period work from Talk Talk and consider it the beginning of "post-rock" music.

But judging from these first responses, my definition of "legendary" differs from others. Beatles, Dylan, Zappa, Kinks, Who, Zep, Floyd, MJ... legendary. Journey, Madonna... not.

Not necessarily come to prominence, but when one thinks back on the 2000's many years from now what will be the most revered and remembered artists of that decade? Each decade has a defining sound with faces and artists behind that sound, what will the 2000's look like many years from now?
