Not necessarily a band breaks up and it's core all find careers in solo work, but more obscure or unknowns way in the back that worked their way up after backing on others.
For Example
Billy Preston
Billy Preston was an American musician whose work included R&B, Soul and Gospel A virtuoso keyboardist, particularly on Hammond organ Preston was recognized as a top session musician in the 1960s, during which he backed artists such as Little Richard, Sam Cooke and the Beatles. He appears with the Beatles on keyboard during the famous Beatles farewell roof top concert.
Sheryl Crow backed Michael Jackson during his Bad tour as a singer. Watch for the back up singers in this vid to the left of the screen, she's the one with the bushy blond hair.
"Phil Collins: Before he was the front man for Genesis, Collins originally came into the group as the drummer and backing vocalist. He took over as lead singer upon Peter Gabriel’s departure in 1975."
At the age of 15, with the help of his mother and stepfather, Elton John became a weekend pianist at a nearby pub, the Northwood Hills Hotel, playing Thursday to Sunday nights. Known simply as "Reggie", he played a range of popular standards, including songs by Jim Reeves and Ray Charles, as well as songs he had written himself. A stint with a short-lived group called the Corvettes rounded out his time.
In 1962, Elton and his friends formed a band called Bluesology. By day, he ran errands for a music publishing company; he divided his nights between solo gigs at a London hotel bar and working with Bluesology. By the mid-1960s, Bluesology was backing touring American soul and R&B musicians like The Isley Brothers and Patti La Belle and the Bluebelles. In 1966, the band became musician Long John Baldry's supporting band, and played 16 times at the Marquee Club.
Jimi Hendrix did time backing up Little Richard, the Isley Brothers, and many others before getting his career as a frontman started.
Yep! Afterwards he done a couple lp's with Curtis Knight and his career went to superstar status in a years time, maybe 6 months time.
This individual played with the Yardbirds in the mid 60's and slowly switched to John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. He gave the reputation "power trio" a whole new meaning from 1967 to 1969 (Cream). And left to join a super group that seemed doomed from the start but a group I would have dearly loved to have seen in concert (Blind Faith) as,yes, they did do a tour in 1969. He helped with getting a husband and wife duet off the ground and done a tour with them (Delaney and Bonnie) and joined another supergroup and contributed one song to Derek and the Dominoes that is my favorite song of all his career.
He went through hell and back, first with a nasty heroin addiction and then the tragic death of his son. One of the key figures in rock music over the last half century.
Eric Clapton
