Hard to believe he was 73. Still young in my book but I remember listening to his songs when I was in high school. RIP and condolences to his family and friends.

Because of what was played in my presence when I was a kid, Billy Joe Royal is one of the many from back in the day that I am no stranger to.

God bless you and his family always!!!

He didn't have many hits but the ones that were are still oldies classics played on the radio 50 years after they were recorded. He was good friends with Joe South, who wrote "Down In The Boondocks" which was included in South's first lp- Introspection. (Capitol ST-106)

"Lord have mercy on the boy from down in the boondocks."

RIP Mr. Royal

Although from way before my time, 'Down in the Boondocks' is really great and one of those classical 60s songs. RIP Billy Joe Royal.

Unhappy In Memoriam: Billy Joe Royal (1942 -2015)

Billy Joe Royal will, no doubt, be missed in the music world. Some nice tributes have been shared already on SiriusXM's '60s on 6. His aforementioned collaborations with Joe South had led to some fine hits in the late '60s, which was the heyday for both artists. You already know about "Down In The Boondocks", but let me present another Joe South tune sung by Mr Royal....

So I just got done listening to other songs of his at the You Tube website, what went to country radio from him in the late 80's/early 90's through the videos that were made to go with the songs that is, and now I can only hang my head in absolute shame. If only I had listened a whole lot sooner.

God bless you and his family always!!!

Holly (born in 1982)

P.S. A message for the precious himself if getting one to him is still possible: I hate that I was this late to your fan base.

P.S.S. In between songs, I actually heard on my radio the mid 90's released country song named "I'm Learning As You Go". Wow, that made me feel so much better and yes that is sarcasm.
