Call me crazy, but I kind of like this. Apparently she's married now (going by a youtube note in the video below), so I am thinking she must have written this song when she was slightly younger. She does a nice job singing covers of Arabic songs as well. I honestly find this one pretty stunning:

I really enjoyed this cover. The family on the cover are playing the guitar instrumental as well? What a beautiful song.
I don't know that much about them. She just happened to show up on an Arabic music playlist I check out on Spotify. But as you say, it looks like her members of her family, as well as her husband, are musicians. Glad you enjoyed the song. In the note she says it's one of her favorite songs ever, and I think that comes across in her performance.
I'm not sure what I think of this Poppy album so far, but I'm having trouble dismissing it. This kind of extreme mash-up of styles isn't new in itself, but it's done really well here. Still, this sort of thing tend to wear thin for me over time, so we'll see. For now I am at least laughing out loud. Some pretty hot guitar playing on this, incidentally.
While I am circling back to 2020, this really pushes my buttons in a good way. Kind of reminds me of that Moroccan song posted earlier, but this is way better. Dina El Wedidi has been one my biggest recent discoveries. I had completely missed her, but her albums from 2019 and 2014 are both very good (and very different from one another), and she has put out a lot of solid individual tracks as well.
This album is not exactly what I had expected so far. I like the minimalist/drone-heavy second half of this one, but I guess it's there the whole time and it just comes to the foreground at that point. Guitarist from Tortoise.
I think Soul or R&B would fit. The theme doesn't change that in my opinion. Maybe Gospel R&B? I'm not generally big on songs with lengthy spoken word of any sort (let alone inspirational spoken word), but I liked this house track from last year, which is more of a agnostic anthem (and--warning--it's all spoken word over a beat). Strong language warning as well:
