When did Blues Traveler, Foo Fighters, Green Day, and Stone Temple Pilots become classic rock? Classic rock could be considered Beatles and Rolling Stones through the 1980s.
Well, some stations use a minimum of 15 years for classic rock.
One of my nearby stations considers itself "the next generation of classic rock" and plays standard 1960s-70s classic rock hits as well as mid-2000s songs. Apparently they've gotten to playing Kings of Leon and Jimmy Eat World.
The stations that were pure classic rock 10 years ago have added some of what were 90's music/college rock/etc and the stations that specialized in 90's new rock/etc started invading on their classic rock turf by mixing in some Led Zep etc. The lines thus are blurred but the odds of hearing "Freebird" on what was a 90's/new rock station is pretty much zero just as you probably won't hear Incubus on the station that plays Skynryd and The Eagles.... but you might hear Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc on both.
I wish the Classic Rock station in our area would expand a little bit.
I spent my youth in the 1970's and 1980's and while I dearly love it, some of that music is starting to sound like a ”time capsule”.
Also, the repetition of the same freaking songs is mind numbing.
”Sweet Home Alabama”, ”Don't Stop Believin'”, ”More than a Feeling”, ”Hotel California”.
Don't care if I never hear any of those again. With so much good music from that era, why the same blessed songs over and over again?
I worked for a company long long ago called broadcast marketing data that did phone and auditorium tests by playing snippets of songs and the people had to answer with familiar or unfamiliar and pick from positive/neutral/negative. The better testing songs got put in heavy rotation. Sometimes they would include older stuff to see which of that would show back up on the radio. They must still be doing that because a while back I started hearing "Runaround" by Blues Traveler all over the place. I heard it in IHOP, I heard it in the grocery store, it was suddenly everywhere. Good song, the video was amusing, but surprised it showed back up that strong.
I listened to classic rock radio a lot in high school, say 1998, and they definitely played "Hells Bells" (1980). So it's perfectly reasonable in 2022 to play songs from 2004. (They also played Tom Petty's then-current single "Free Girl Now," which I thought was odd for classic rock.)
In a previous thread, I suggested "Seven Nation Army" (2003) as the last massively popular rock song. That fits the timeline for the newest songs mentioned here -- though I haven't specifically heard it on a classic rock station.
