A song that fits in this thread like a glove IMO is the Eric Burdon and the Animals song "The Black Plague" which was released in 1967 on the lp "Winds Of Change". The song of course is based on Burdon's thoughts of the Black Plague that ravaged parts of Europe and Africa in the13th century.
This song was inspired by songs like "The Last Kiss" that were played in that time period. It barely charted, probably because few stations would give it any airplay. It was a popular Dr. D disc though.
