Greetings:

Caught the opening act of the 2022 US Tour by The Who at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL on April 22.

Great show--first time seeing this classic group since 1979 !!.....the band played nearly 2.5 hours without a break and were accompanied with an excellent orchestra. The venue at the Hard Rock is nothing short of sensational--I was blessed to see a band of this magnitude with state of the art acoustics in a concert hall that seats only 7000.

The group started off with a medley overture from Tommy, and played a bunch of classics (5:15, Join Together, The Seeker, Pinball Wizard, Substitute, The Kids are Alright, See Me Feel Me, Eminence Front, Won't Get Fooled Again, Behind Blue Eyes, etc) as well as a few new songs. They ended the performance with a great version of Baba O'Riley (see clip below and check out how GREAT Katie Jacoby was starting at about the 4 minute mark of the video).

They will be hitting a dozen or so more cities (mostly in basketball/hockey arenas), though there are a couple of outdoor venues that should be real good such as at the New Orleans Jazzfest, Hollywood Bowl, and in Bethel, NY--near the site of the original Woodstock.

Worth catching if you get a chance.

I'm glad you liked it. The Who are interesting to me as they never seemed to reach the level of the Beatles or Stones during the 60s, but they had just kept plugging along. I'd love to see them when Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs open, but I don't see a show close to me (Charlotte or Atlanta) regardless of the opening act. Of course, ticket prices for shows from these legendary acts are more than I'd spend. I prefer small local shows from good acts that I know. I am seeing Drivin' N Cryin' in two weeks in an intimate setting near me.

If the Beatles and Stones are 1, The Who are 1A….they did play at Woodstock, produced a couple of Rock Operas, one of which—Tommy—was turned into a movie. They’re definitely up there, a top 10 rock band of all time for sure that has withstood the test of time in spite of losing Keith Moon and John Entwistle. The Who paved the way for Punk rock. Great in concert, with high energy and little—if any—drop off from studio sound. They’ve remained true to form and are less commercialized than the Stones.

And I am really looking forward to them coming to Denver. On the 2019 tour they had to cancel the last couple shows on their tour, which included Denver, because of Roger Daltrey's voice problems at the September 26, 2019 show in Houston.

The last time I saw them was on their first farewell tour, probably 1982. Kenny Jones was good, but he was no Keith Moon. I don't picture seeing Pete and Roger without John Entwhistle and Keith Moon.

I saw them way back in May 1980 ...it was good but not as good as with Keith Moon.

The year before ...1979....I saw a documentary on The Who by Jeff Stein,
"The Kids Are Alright".....I liked the band but was more of a Beatle fan and
a Black Sabbath fan. I convinced my friends they had to see this documentary,
when we entered the movie theater I was the only fan...when we exited the movie
theater all four of us were die hard Who fans! ....it was that good!

The Who are always good live ...but their peak ....hard pick a year ...1969 or 1970...
but 1971 might be their peak because they had new material from "Who's Next" album.

Good news is there are a ton of videos from that era on youtube ...
"Heaven and Hell" ....live at Tanglewood July 7, 1970....
I love Townshends 2 minute solo in the middle...he hits a couple of off key notes
in the middle but it is great stuff...SG Special ...Hiwatt DR-103...and for the solo
you see him stomp on the foot switch of his trusty Univox Superfuzz pedal...

"Sparks" ...live at Woodstock August 19, 1969....
there is 5:12 full clip on youtube ...I have watched to many many times...
the first almost 2 minutes is crazy feedback as Townshend untangles his guitar cable and strap...
feedback never sounded so good! ...then it goes into the actual "Sparks" instrumental...
I love playing Sparks on guitar ...is mostly a ton of "D" shape chords up and down the neck.

"Pinball Wizard"....that intro is the best intro of all time...variations on a B minor chord...
then variations of F sharp chord....then G to B ....thrn extremely fast strumming on B ..
descending progression...A ...then G ...then F# ....then those patented Townshend powerchords
B ...A ...D ...E ....I think Pete Townshend invented the powerchord....

Here is a bit of Trivia....Townshend came up with the concept of a "Rock Opera" about
a deaf dumb and blind boy in early 1968 while The Who were on tour in Australia....
The Who started recording the album at IBC Studios in London on september 19, 1968,
they were almost finished in january 1969 and played it to influential british rock journalist
Nik Cohn, Townshend then ask him what he thought of it...he said it was ok but a bit pretentious,
Townshend jokingly asked ..."would you give it a good review if Tommy played pinball?"
(knowing that Nik Cohn was a pinball fanatic)....Nik joked back..."yeah, I would give it a good review",
Well Pete wrote "Pinball Wizard" the next day....it was recorded on February 7th 1969,
and released on March 7th 1969 as a single ....B side ...a crazy instrumental ..."Dogs Part 2"
and credited to Keith Moon's dog on the label....I have the 45 single....

Finally completed ...The Who unveiled "Tommy" on May 1st 1969 at the Marquee Club,
for journalists only ....including Nik Cohn in attendence ....they playef the entire album live
at a blisturing ear ringing high volume in the small club.

Actually 3 operas if you include the Lifehouse project. It was released in pieces as parts of other stuff, but it does exist.
