I've recently obtained a fair amount of 78 RPM records(bought a large boxful at a yard sale last summer for $2, and a co-worker gave me a large batch after cleaning out his late father's attic). What turntables have the steel needle necessary for playing them? (Ideally, I would like a free-standing turntable, that doesn't require an amplifier.) I have a Crosley phonograph (one that looks like it's from the 1940s, except for the CD drawer and cassette slot), and its needle would skate all over the place if I tried to play the 78s on it.
What I should have stressed is that I need advice re makes and models that have needles able to play 78s without inflicting damage on either the record or the stylus.
My 78s play fine on my 1968 magnavox (Same needle that i listen to 33s and 45s with)
